A week ago, race seven of the 2024 America’s Cup looked like a mere formality but not anymore. After Team New Zealand took a 4-0 lead Ineos Britannia cut it down to only two. The two wins were the first for a Great Britain team in 90 years and six days.

But the celebrations can’t be too premature. Ben Ainslie and his crew know that there is no margin for error in this best-of-13 if they want their names in the history books. Today’s races provide an opportunity to tie things up. Will Ineos Britannia do just that or will it slip from their fingers.

New Zealand team wins race 7 and leads 5-2

As Ineos Britannia finished Leg 5, the last thing I wanted to see was my opponent barreling toward the finish, but here we are.

Section 5/6: New Zealand continues to defend the right side of the race. They choose the wind and there is nothing the opponent can do about it. At this point, the Defenders were about 750 meters behind when they passed the top gate.

share

Line 4 of 6: The Defender boat looks completely different than it did a few days ago and is much more stable. The British are waiting for us to make a mistake. Earlier, Team New Zealand's Ray Davies said: “After a lot of data analysis, it looks like we've been able to squeeze more performance out of the boat.” They lead Ineos Britannia in average speed, average VMG (velocity increasing speed), and maneuverability.

6 legs 3: The track is full of holes, but New Zealand still insists on remaining on the left. Their top speed is 40km/h and they hold a healthy lead. The Brits finished 24 seconds behind, but their communication showed their frustration.

Leg 2 of 6: This New Zealand team is very good. They seem to have learned their lessons from the past two races, with the team stressing constant communication on board and not wanting to play catch-up. After the second leg, he regained the lead and had a 13-second lead over his opponent.

6 legs 1: Team NZ quickly realized that the left side was where the wind would give them the most advantage. The Brit opts for a turn to the right on the racetrack, but this proves costly, giving the Defenders a massive early lead.

New Zealand finished in 3 minutes 54 seconds, with Ineos Britannia making the turn 12 seconds later.

But we know the Challengers are fast downwind. Will they be able to catch up?

located a few minutes away We will see if Ineos Britannia can maintain its good form from the expected start of Race 7. Here's a look at how Britain's turnaround began in race five.

From beginning to end, @ineosbritania The fact that this victory was the country's first in 90 years makes it even more memorable. That's why race 5 is a win for us. @emirates #flybetter for a moment. pic.twitter.com/u9XzWTWtBc

Another email arrived! This is from Craig.

The number of races is fixed and the person who wins most of them wins, but is there also a possibility that there are tied races? Does it basically continue until someone wins 7 or does it start from a constant number? Will there be the most wins?

It would help if there wasn't a slight error in the preamble, which has now been corrected, but it's a 1st to 7th place system with 1 point awarded for each race won. The first team to score seven points will be the winner of the America's Cup and the defender of the 38th edition of the competition.

Here's a handy guide explaining all the nuances, perfect for all beginners.

This morning in Barcelona The wind is blowing from the northwest and is expected to subside briefly before the race begins.

Sea conditions will weaken slightly during the day, and waves of 0.8 meters are expected to arrive from the south every 5 seconds in the afternoon.

The waves are not in sync with the wind, which can create difficult sailing conditions.

Temperatures also drop to a maximum of 20°C.

first email of the day came from jeremy

Love it or hate it (which is my case), if all goes well these foil boats go very fast and are exciting to watch. Today is totally 'squeak time' for Ainsley's team. If they lose just one, NZ can retain their title within a day, but if they lose both, it's as good as over. I wonder if Sir Jim didn't take the opportunity to invite Sir Ferg to Barcelona as a freebie, in return for terminating his Manchester United ambassadorship/salary, and the team's performance in one of two ways? I'm wondering if you've thought about how you can help revitalize it. What's the story of his famous “teacup”? How are the wind and water conditions today?

You're right. Please ride a lot today. There was a lot of pressure on Ainsley and his crew to confirm their performance in races five and six. There's also a bit of history here. If Ineos Britannia wins one more race, it will become the most successful British challenger. I would also like to keep an eye out for sightings of Jim Ratcliffe and Alex Ferguson.

And as for the weather…

Let's briefly review About how we got here.

Technical issues hampered the Ineos Britannia boat in the first two races, giving the Kiwis two comfortable wins.

They then received a penalty and were unable to compete in Race 3…

Although he got off to a good start in the fourth race, he was unable to maintain his momentum.

However, the New Zealanders found themselves unprepared due to changing sea conditions and struggled in the final two races.

preamble

A week ago, the seventh race of the 2024 America's Cup looked like a mere formality, but that is no longer the case. After the New Zealand team took a 4-0 lead, Ineos Britannia closed the gap to two points. It was the first time in 90 years and six days for a British team to win two games.

But the celebration can't be too early. Ben Ainslie and his staff know they can't afford to go wrong in this last-13 race if they want to make history. Today's race is a chance to settle things. Will Ineos Britannia do just that, or will it just slip through their fingers?

Start time is scheduled for 1:10pm (BST) in Barcelona. Let's go sailing.
