A father and grandfather-to-be, Greg O’Neill, age 63, tragically lost his life due to a shark attack while swimming at Sorrento Beach, located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Australia. This incident unfolded on Friday in front of shocked beachgoers.
Ryan Rowe, a local who arrived shortly after the incident, expressed his disbelief at the amount of blood involved, saying, “I couldn’t believe there was that much blood that had come out of a human body.”
The attack has drawn attention from officials, prompting Australia’s fisheries minister, Jackie Jarvis, to advocate for a rare catch-and-kill response to the great white shark responsible for the tragedy, despite it being a protected species. She stated, “In making that decision, I considered the exceptional circumstances of the attack, the hazard posed by the shark, and the potential recovery of coronial evidence.”
While police have not confirmed whether O’Neill’s remains were located, they mentioned they are confident he died as a direct result of the attack.
Dreadful witness accounts have emerged, including one from Darrel Haythornthwaite, who recounted how O’Neill was swimming with a friend during the attack. Emotionally charged, Haythornthwaite shared, “I was just shocked. I mean, I feel for his mate. He’s apologized and said ‘I didn’t save my mate’ … I said, ‘You couldn’t have done anything.’
O’Neill’s family has expressed their devastation over the loss, describing him as a beloved father and devoted family man. In a heartfelt statement to ABC News Australia, they reflected, “Our family is deeply shocked and devastated by the terrible tragedy that took the life of father, grandfather-to-be, brother, uncle, husband and friend, Greg James O’Neill.”
He was fondly remembered as a generous person who dedicated himself to his family. “Greg loved the ocean and was known as a passionate swimmer, sports lover, dedicated worker, and an all-around generous, witty guy,” his family lamented, adding that they appreciate the support from the community during this tragic time.
This incident marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Just days prior, a surfer sustained serious leg injuries in another attack, this one about 250 miles north of Perth. A few shark attacks earlier this year had resulted in tragic fatalities, including those of three spearfishing divers and a 12-year-old boy in Sydney Harbor in January.
