Greek authorities rescue 100 migrants found in vessel off southern mainland

ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Greek authorities on Monday rescued 100 migrants who were aboard a smuggling boat that crashed off the coast of the country’s southern mainland, officials said.

The coast guard said the migrants were removed from the ship by tugboats dispatched to the area and safely transported to the southeastern village of Monemvasia. No injuries were reported.

The coast guard said the smuggler was off the coast of Cape Mareas, on the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese.

Details such as the nationalities of the migrants, the type of ship they were on, and where they departed from are currently unknown.

The area was used by smugglers to transport migrants from Turkey to Italy on board packed yachts, bypassing southern Greece and avoiding the heavily guarded waters off the Aegean islands. It’s on the route.
