Green Energy Project Cancellations on the Rise
According to data from Green Energy Group E2, a significant $1.4 billion project was scrapped in May as President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans intensified efforts to dismantle President Joe Biden’s climate initiatives.
In the first five months of 2025 alone, project cancellations have already hit twice the total for all of 2024. To date, over $15 billion in green energy investments have been abandoned this year, E2 reports. The actions taken by the Trump administration have reversed policies beneficial to industries such as offshore wind and solar, while Congressional Republicans are contemplating changes to the Green Energy Tax Credit.
“The effects of ongoing policy uncertainty and looming higher taxes on clean energy companies are becoming glaringly apparent,” noted E2 spokesperson Michael Timberlake.
Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), enacted in August 2022, was intended to fund green energy projects through substantial tax credits and grants, which Trump and some GOP senators are eager to overturn. Initially, Democrats touted the IRA as a measure to combat inflation, but Biden later acknowledged it as a vehicle for his climate agenda. In contrast, Trump’s energy policy focused on traditional sources, like coal, which he argued helped reduce the deficit.
The future of IRA credits hangs in the balance as Congressional Republicans push a significant legislative package. Experts have warned that preserving the IRA’s Green Energy credits would conflict with Trump’s energy goals. Many GOP senators are eager to meet their deadlines, expressing a desire to either preserve or adjust the tax credits that are at risk.
With Republicans currently holding 53 seats in the Senate, just four dissenting lawmakers could hinder the legislative package.
Despite adjustments being possible, notably the potential phasing out of the Green Energy Tax Credit, experts believe some funding might continue indefinitely.
Trump voiced his discontent regarding the “green tax credit” via a social media post, labeling it a “huge scam” and suggesting that the funds would be better allocated elsewhere.
