Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) reacted to President Trump’s assertion that food prices are decreasing, stating that many Americans are still struggling with affordability—an issue she believes played a role in recent Republican election losses.
“I shop for groceries on my own,” Greene told CNN’s Caitlan Collins on Thursday. “Prices at the grocery store are still high. Energy costs are up. My electricity bill here in D.C. is higher, and it’s the same back home in Rome, Georgia. It’s just more expensive than last year.”
“It really comes down to affordability,” she continued, expressing particular concern for the younger generation, describing their situation as challenging.
During her visit back to her hometown in Georgia, she mentioned hearing from numerous voters who struggled with grocery bills and rent payments.
“We’re getting reports of people really having a tough time covering essentials like groceries and rent, and some are even maxing out credit cards to manage their monthly bills,” she shared with Collins.
Greene has previously linked the public’s dissatisfaction with economic conditions to Democratic wins in recent elections, regarding it as a significant factor.
“I’ve been discussing the cost of living for months,” she noted in an NBC interview, adding that while she could give the president “some credit” regarding inflation, rents and property prices are still on the rise.
The recently elected Democratic candidate, who won decisively, made affordability a key theme of his campaign. In New York City, Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani pledged free bus services for voters, while candidates in Virginia and New Jersey also highlighted the importance of tackling the rising cost of living.
In the lead-up to Tuesday’s election, President Trump acknowledged voters’ concerns about affordability, claiming energy prices had been “plummeting” during his administration.
“If affordability is your concern, vote Republican!” Trump posted on Tuesday.
Following the Republican losses, he reiterated his claims that prices had decreased, describing the affordability issue as “dead.”
“My costs are lower than the Democrats’ on everything, especially oil and gas!” Trump shared online on Thursday. “So the Democrats’ ‘affordability’ argument is over! Enough with the lies!”
Nevertheless, Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Vice President Vance acknowledged that affordability is still a pressing issue for voters.
“We’re committed to working for a decent and affordable life in this country. Ultimately, that will be the measure of our success from 2026 onward,” Vance stated on his social media platform on Wednesday.
