Reaction to Pelosi’s Retirement

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed admiration for Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) upon her retirement announcement from Congress.

On Thursday, Pelosi shared that she would step down at the end of her term and would not run for re-election. When interviewed by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Greene mentioned her belief in term limits but emphasized her respect for Pelosi’s extensive achievements over her four decades in the House.

“I’m genuinely impressed by her capacity to accomplish things,” Greene stated. “If only we could achieve as much for our party as she did for hers. I wish her well in her retirement, but frankly, I hope she leaves Washington sooner rather than waiting until folks hit their 80s.”

As the government shutdown persists, Greene has been vocal in criticizing Republican leadership for not sticking to an “America First” agenda.

This past week, Republicans faced losses in several elections against Democratic candidates. Some leaders have brushed off these outcomes as isolated incidents, but Greene insisted that this serves as a “wake-up call” for the party to fulfill its promises to voters. She underscored that, unlike Pelosi, Republican leaders are not delivering on their commitments.

“I’m dedicated to America First and I make no apologies for that,” Greene remarked. “Congress, regardless of party affiliation, should prioritize serving the American people. When candidates campaign on an America First platform but don’t follow through, it’s like a restaurant promoting a specific type of cuisine but then serving something entirely different. Customers won’t return.”

When asked about criticizing Trump or suggesting alternative actions, Greene conveyed that the president seems misaligned with pressing issues. She added, “While my criticism isn’t aimed at the America First agenda, as a congress member, I think Congress bears the brunt of the responsibility. It’s also about the advice he’s receiving in the White House. Constant travel and meetings with foreign leaders aren’t what should be prioritized. Domestic policy, I believe, should come first, and the recent election results reflect that.”

Questioned about whether Trump shares blame, she suggested he is somewhat caught in “information silos.” The White House did not offer a response to these comments.

Greene also shared that, despite her ongoing critiques of Republican leadership, she has no plans to leave the party. She recounted, “A lot of people might not realize this, but I ran for Congress back in 2020 due to my dissatisfaction with my own party. Many Republican candidates campaign on unified fronts but fail to deliver once they hold power. A lot of voters feel this way, as evidenced by Tuesday’s results. I represent Americans who are ready to stop foreign conflicts and focus on domestic issues.”

Greene acknowledged her critiques of Republican leaders in shows like “The View,” and noted that Trump might not be her biggest supporter given his past criticisms of party leaders. She stated, “That’s alright.”
