Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduced a bill Thursday that would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
“The American people pay to protect and secure our maritime waterways for commerce. Our military protects our region from all foreign military threats.” Green said in a statement. on social platform.
“It's our bay. Its rightful name is American Bay, and the whole world should call it that.”
He praised the bill, which directs the chairman of the Geographical Names Board under the Secretary of the Interior to rename all federal documents and maps within 180 days of signing.
Greene had promised to introduce the bill “as soon as possible” after President-elect Trump's proposal on Tuesday encouraged the name change.
President Trump said, “I will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.''
“What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate. It's appropriate. And Mexico has to stop letting millions of people flow into our country.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum quickly hit back with her own wordplay suggesting North America should be called “America Mexicana” or “Mexican America.”
But Mr. Trump's idea was made possible with the help of Mr. Greene.
“Congress needs to take seriously the imperatives of the Trump Agenda, and that means moving quickly to enact it. This is a day-one bill, awaiting signature the moment President Trump takes the oath of office. “There is a possibility that this could lead to serious consequences,” the Georgia representative added in a statement.
“I urge my colleagues to join me in quickly passing this bill.”
