Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) promised to introduce legislation “as soon as possible” supporting President-elect Trump's idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
in online postingGreene shared a video of Trump touting the idea of renaming the body of water “American Gulf.”
“Hopefully President @realDonaldTrump's second term is off to a great start,” the Georgia Republican said. “I will introduce legislation as soon as possible to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”
Earlier Tuesday, President Trump told reporters he wanted to change the name of the Gulf Coast, criticizing Mexico for taking advantage of the United States on trade and immigration issues.
“We're going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” the president-elect said. “What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate. It's appropriate. And Mexico must stop the flow of millions of people into our country.”
President Trump is preparing for his second term in office, and has begun solidifying his economic policies, including imposing additional tariffs. Late last year, he announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico.
Trump later spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation on Monday, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The president-elect has continued to criticize Mexico, saying on Tuesday that it is a “very dangerous place” run by cartels.
The president-elect also hinted Monday that the United States would merge with Canada after Trudeau leaves, insisting there would be “no tariffs” and security from international threats. The pitch comes weeks after the prime minister teased him by calling him Canada's “governor” and joking that Canada could become Canada's 51st province.
