Sierra Club Pushes for Removal of Massachusetts Lawmaker

The Sierra Club is urging local Democratic legislators to step down from significant committee positions, a request that the Speaker of the Massachusetts House has dismissed as “stupid.”

State Representative Mark Cusack, who leads the House Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy Committee, is said to be considering a plan that could reduce Massachusetts’ climate change commitments and reduce funding for environmental initiatives. Following this, the local Sierra Club’s Executive Committee unanimously voted to seek Cusack’s removal as chair. According to local papers, chapter members were furious, suggesting this move undermines the state’s important clean energy law.

Speaker Ron Mariano criticized the Sierra Club’s call, stating it reflects a misunderstanding of legislative processes, claiming they are overreacting to an outdated committee effort regarding the Energy Affordability Act. He noted that the House is committed to maintaining the state’s climate objectives while focusing on lowering energy costs for residents—a goal he believes should be universally supported.

As the energy affordability bill progresses through the Massachusetts General Assembly, the Sierra Club opposes elements that they feel conflict with climate goals. A spokesperson for the group indicated that these changes could impose higher costs on ratepayers by enlarging the gas distribution system, which they argue contributes significantly to expense increases. They also mentioned concerns about a rushed and unclear legislative process, recalling doubts about Cusack’s intentions based on past actions, including accepting donations from fossil fuel interests shortly before the bill’s disclosure.

There are reports that Cusack received over $2,000 from energy-related groups around the time the plan became public. However, it seems unlikely that Mariano will remove him from his position. Some local environmentalists expressed uncertainty about the potential effects of Cusack’s departure, suggesting that the Sierra Club’s strategy could backfire.

While emphasizing affordability remains a key priority ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, recent polls suggest that climate change has become less of a focus for voters. Observers note that as a result, some Democrats now shy away from climate discussions, even distancing themselves from previously supported initiatives like the Green New Deal.

Massachusetts has set ambitious goals to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and aims to cut emissions to at least half of 1990 levels by 2030. Some climate advocates are reportedly moving away from the Sierra Club’s narrative, encouraging broader engagement with Congressional members.
