Greenland Prime Minister Calls for Independence from Denmark

Greenland Prime Minister Moute Egede has called for Greenland to seek independence from the Kingdom of Denmark, noting that now is “the time to take the next step.”

In his speech on Wednesday, Egede said: spoke “Like the rest of the world,” Greenland “must strive to remove obstacles to cooperation,” which it described as “colonial shackles.” Egede added that “history and the current situation show that cooperation between Greenland and Demark has not been able to produce complete equality.”

“The time has come for us to take a step forward and shape our future, both in terms of who we work closely with and what our trade relationships will look like,” Egede said. “Cooperation and trade relations with other countries cannot continue solely through Denmark.”

Egede continued: “The option of independence for the people of Greenland has been adopted through the provisions of the Autonomy Act, which provides the legal basis for how to achieve independence.”

“A draft constitution, which is the constitution of our country, has also been prepared,” Egede added. “Work has already begun to frame Greenland as an independent state within the possibilities and provisions of the Autonomy Law.”

Egede's call for independence from Denmark comes after President-elect Donald Trump previously said it was “absolutely necessary” for the United States to own Greenland.

Posted by Truth Social announcement As Ambassador Ken Howley to Denmark, President Trump wrote, “For purposes of national security and freedom around the world, the United States feels that ownership and control of Greenland is absolutely necessary.”

In response to Trump's post, Egede said: said Greenland “is not for sale and will never be for sale,” he said.

“Greenland is ours,” Egede said. “We are not and never will be for sale. We must not lose our age-old struggle for freedom.”
