Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede announced Friday that he is “ready to talk” with President-elect Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in acquiring the island.
in joint press conference Egede, who met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen, said he had not yet spoken to Trump but wanted to “discuss what brings us together.”
“Cooperation means dialogue. Cooperation means working towards solutions.” Egede said.
Frederiksen also expressed his willingness to discuss Greenland with Trump, saying, “The United States is our closest ally and we will make every effort to continue our strong cooperation.”
He also pointed out that President Trump's interest in Greenland speaks to its value on the international stage. “The debate about Greenland's independence and the latest announcement from the United States shows that we have a great interest in Greenland. These events have given many people in Greenland and Denmark much to think about. and emotions,” she said.
Greenland was a Danish colony from the 18th century until the 1950s, when it became an autonomous Danish territory. In 2009, the island nation won the right to declare independence if its 57,000 residents voted.
“We don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.”
Egede expressed interest in meeting with President Trump, noting that Greenland is “a place that Americans consider part of their world,” but that he and his fellow countrymen will become part of the United States. I repeated that I didn't want that.
“We have a desire for independence, a desire to be the masters of our own homes. … This is something that everyone should respect,” he explained. “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders. We don't want to be Danes. We don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.”
