Greg Gumbel, legendary sports broadcaster, dead at 78

Greg Gumbel, the longtime sportscaster who called the NFL on CBS for decades and served as the studio host during the NCAA Tournament, has died, Emmy Award-winning producer Dan Foller said. wrote on Facebook Friday.

Gumbel was 78 years old.

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

“The holidays are supposed to be full of joy, but they are often mixed with sadness,” Forrer wrote. “I just learned that my dear friend Greg Gumbel has passed away. Greg was the best announcer a young producer and director could have, because he was so inclusive and never lost his cool. Gumbel withdrew from last year's NCAA Tournament due to “family health issues,” The Athletic reported at the time.
