Greg Popovich is stepping into a new role while maintaining his trademark humor.
After resigning as head coach of the Spurs on Friday, Popovich made his first public appearance since early April, as the team unveiled their new coach, Mitch Johnson.
During the event, Popovich took to the podium to pass the reins to Johnson, showcasing a new T-shirt that featured the word “Eljev,” which translates from Spanish to “boss.”
“I have a new job. I just want to clarify what that new job is,” Popovich remarked, playfully removing his jacket. “I’m not a coach anymore; I’m ‘Elgev.’”
Behind the shirt, there was also a title proclaiming him as “Señor Popovich, president of Basketball Ops.”
In a light-hearted moment, he grabbed Manu Ginobili’s arm, playfully twisting it before embracing Johnson.
There was a palpable emotional charge during the introductory press conference, especially on Johnson’s end.
“The best thing you’ve taught me is that you’ve shown me more than you taught me,” Johnson shared, with evident gratitude.
Popovich took a step back from coaching following a mild stroke in November, with Johnson stepping in as the interim coach.
After Popovich’s brief hiatus, Johnson managed the Spurs to a 31-45 record, wrapping up the 2024-25 season at 34-48.
As the all-time winningest coach in NBA history with 1,422 victories, Popovich now transitions to the front office, where he will work with general manager Brian Wright and emerging star Victor Wembanyama to develop the team’s roster.
San Antonio intends to strengthen its lineup as the season progresses, notably acquiring guard De’Aaron Fox.
