Greta Thunberg Critiques Italian Government at Rally
Swedish activist Greta Thunberg expressed strong criticism of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her government at a pro-Palestinian rally in Rome on Sunday. During her speech, she used harsh language to convey her disapproval.
Thunberg had recently participated in various climate change protests across Italy. She arrived in Rome after joining members of Extinction Rebellion in Venice, where they caused disturbances in the Grand Canal, and returned to support the pro-Palestinian cause amidst an ongoing strike against Italy’s backing of Israel. This strike was organized by the Communist Union of Workers (USB).
At the rally, Thunberg accused Meloni of being “complicit” in what she termed “genocide” occurring in Gaza. “I can tell you how physically disgusted and heartbroken I feel when I think of those who commit such acts, including your fascist government,” she remarked.
She further emphasized Italy’s significant role in supporting Israel’s actions, citing financial and military backing. Thunberg urged attendees to continue protesting and organizing against what she labeled as environmental destruction and genocide.
Before the Rome event, she also attended a similar rally in Genoa, where she danced with Francesca Albanese, a United Nations representative focused on occupied Palestinian territories. In Genoa, she reiterated her condemnation of the ongoing violence, stating, “The genocide in Palestine is still going on.”
Thunberg accused Israel of actively using humanitarian aid as a means to wage war against Palestine and expressed disappointment in global leaders for failing to prevent such tragedies. She stressed the need for individuals to rise up for justice, concluding with gratitude towards the people of Genoa for their solidarity in this struggle.
