Thunberg was first arrested and briefly detained by local police on Saturday, along with other protesters who tried to block the main highway leading into The Hague.
After her release, Thunberg quickly returned to her small group of protesters and blocked an alternative route to the station. She was detained a second time and taken away in a police van.
A representative from protest organizer Extinction Rebellion said: Reuters She was reportedly detained for several hours before being released again in the evening.
Before her arrest, Thunberg told the media that the world was facing an existential crisis and that this was behind her protests.
“We are in a global emergency and, no matter what we can do, we will not sit idly by and watch people lose their lives and livelihoods and be forced to become climate refugees.” she said.
Demonstrators attempted to block the adjacent A12 motorway. In recent months, the road has been blocked for several hours several times by protests calling for the end of all fossil fuel subsidies.
In early demonstrations, police moved arrested protesters to other areas of the city, where they were released without further repercussions.
Local police said anyone who tried to block the road was taken into custody but would not comment on specific incidents.
Police reported on social media that 412 demonstrators were detained, mainly for taking part in illegal protests.
