Eric Dane Passes Away at 53

Eric Dane, recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, or “McSteamy,” in the popular series “Grey’s Anatomy,” has passed away at the age of 53.

Dane’s death follows his announcement from 10 months ago regarding his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“With heavy hearts, we announce that Eric Dane succumbed on Thursday afternoon after a brave fight against ALS,” his representatives shared.

“In his final days, he was surrounded by his dear friends, his loving wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a fervent advocate for awareness and research, striving to make a meaningful impact for others facing similar challenges.”

“He will be deeply missed and always cherished,” the statement concluded. “Eric treasured his fans and was immensely grateful for their support. His family asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”

Having disclosed his diagnosis the previous year, Dane took an active role in advocating for those living with ALS. He sought to raise awareness and promote fundraising initiatives.

“I’ve been candidly writing about parts of my life, and this was something I felt compelled to share,” Dane expressed during an IAMALS.org virtual panel. “Rather than worrying about perceptions, my focus is on helping others. How can I make a positive difference?”

“Don’t get too morbid,” he added. “But if I’m going to leave this world, I want to do something meaningful for someone else.”

In December 2025, during a heartfelt update on IAMALS.org, Dane revealed that his ALS was advancing quickly. By that time, he had lost the use of his arms, his speech had noticeably changed, and he was using a wheelchair.

He is survived by his daughters, Billie and Georgia.
