Group of Democratic-led states files lawsuit against Trump administration over SNAP funding delay

Democratic States Sue Trump Administration Over SNAP Fund Access

A coalition of Democratic-led states has taken legal action against the Trump administration, challenging its refusal to utilize Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) reserves amid the ongoing government shutdown.

The lawsuit argues that the administration is legally obligated to access approximately $5 billion in reserve funds to help cover part of the $9.2 billion allocated for SNAP benefits in November. The SNAP program assists around 42 million low-income Americans in purchasing food.

“The emergency funds set aside for SNAP are not discretionary expenditures. They are required by law,” expressed Democratic Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro from Connecticut.

She went on to say, “We have earmarked that money for this purpose, and the White House must use it. What they’re doing now to prevent these funds from being used is illegal.”

The Trump administration had previously stated that they would not release reserve funds for the SNAP expiration, citing that these funds are meant for unexpected circumstances like natural disasters.

The USDA noted, “The Emergency Fund is for emergencies such as natural disasters, which can happen quickly and without warning.”

In its defense, the USDA’s official website asserted that it is the Democrats who have contributed to the funding shortfall, saying, “Senate Democrats have now voted 12 times to defund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).”

They added, “The bottom line is that the well is dry. There are currently no benefits to be issued on November 1st. It’s a critical moment for Senate Democrats. They can keep funding medical care for undocumented immigrants or they can reopen the government to ensure that mothers and vulnerable populations receive essential nutritional assistance.”

The lawsuit has been initiated by governors and attorneys general from multiple states, including Arizona, California, New York, and Wisconsin, among others.

In their claim, the Democratic leaders argued that halting SNAP benefits would harm public health and welfare, leading to significant issues.

“Discontinuing SNAP benefits can result in food insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition, which can adversely affect children’s health, causing concentrated issues like cognitive decline and behavioral problems,” the lawsuit stated.

When asked about the SNAP funding lapse, President Trump assured reporters that the issue would be resolved, saying, “We’re going to get it done.”

He added, “Unfortunately, it’s the Democrats who caused the problem. All they have to do is sign. If they sign, I’m going to meet with them.”

Furthermore, Trump highlighted health care as a critical negotiation point in discussions regarding government funding reopening. He criticized the Affordable Care Act, stating it “never worked” and that collaboration with Democrats could result in better healthcare options at lower costs.

President Trump remarked, “Insurance companies are making too much money, and I think it’s a great time for both parties to come together to create something effective.”

The states involved in the legal action are urging U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani to compel the Trump administration to utilize the USDA reserves in the interim.

Judge Talwani is scheduled to preside over an emergency hearing on the matter, where both sides will present their arguments.
