Group Opposing TPUSA 'Hate' Backs Anti-Israel Protester Facing Hate Crime Charge

Clashes Over Hate Speech at UC Berkeley

A group identifying as Student Organizing for Liberation (SOL) is opposing Turning Point USA’s efforts at the University of California, Berkeley, while simultaneously expressing support for demonstrators facing hate crime allegations related to anti-Israel protests.

On Monday, SOL intended to disrupt a TPUSA event, resulting in several arrests amid chaotic confrontations. Just a day prior, members of SOL reportedly demonstrated at an Oakland courthouse for Ali Rastegar, who is accused of stealing an Israeli flag on Berkeley’s campus and threatening to “burn” it. The accusations have attracted significant attention.

Rastegar, a 20-year-old, reportedly made various hostile statements about Zionists during the incident. He is facing charges that include hate crimes and petty theft. As of now, court documents indicate he has pleaded not guilty and does not have an attorney listed.

Interestingly, SOL seems to lack an official website and has not responded to requests for comments from various news outlets.

The group is rallying support for Rastegar’s upcoming court hearing, with a message on social media encouraging attendance. They argue that pro-Palestinian protesters are facing unjust treatment, claiming that the university is siding with pro-Israel sentiments. Their post included statements like, “Glory to the martyrs” and “Free Palestine from the rivers to the sea.”

Additionally, SOL criticized UC Berkeley’s preparations to provide a safe environment for the TPUSA event, which they described as an opportunity for spreading “hate and fascism.” Another post urged supporters to bring noise-makers to protest the TPUSA presence.
