GSA reaches agreement with xAI to introduce Grok AI to federal agencies

Trump Administration Partners with Xai to Enhance Government AI

The agency in charge of managing government real estate and technology services has teamed up with Elon Musk’s Xai to make federal workflows more efficient and cost-effective. This partnership, announced by the General Services Bureau, allows federal agencies to utilize Grok 4 until March 2027.

In a statement, Musk, who serves as co-founder and CEO of Xai, noted that the company possesses powerful AI computing capabilities and advanced models. He expressed gratitude towards the Trump administration for enabling this kind of access to AI, which he believes will help the U.S. government innovate more effectively.

“We’re eager to collaborate with President Trump and his team to quickly deploy AI across the government, benefiting the nation,” Musk stated.

Josh Gruenbaum, the Federal Acquisition Services Commissioner for the General Services Administration, explained that this new access to AI is crucial for the U.S. to fulfill its commitment to leading in the AI race. It’s also seen as an essential tool for creating a government that operates efficiently and is accountable to taxpayers.

As part of the deal, engineers from Xai will provide support to speed up the integration of GROK into government operations. The General Services Administration (GSA) emphasizes that agencies will now be able to take advantage of the GROK AI model through existing procurement methods.

Gruenbaum added that these AI tools not only help modernize government operations but also work towards positioning the U.S. competitively against nations like China in the AI arena. He described Xai as a strong partner bringing top-tier technical expertise to the table.

The GSA’s comprehensive strategy also includes the establishment of a compliance program that standardizes security measures. According to the terms, Grok for Government will provide significant AI capabilities at a low cost for a duration of 18 months, supported by a dedicated engineering team aimed at ensuring successful integration.

Gruenbaum highlighted that this agreement represents an impressive milestone for the agency, mentioning that it’s the best value seen so far with the longest duration for such services.

Previously, the GSA had introduced a new tool to help federal agencies implement AI efficiently and effectively as part of Trump’s AI Action Plan, initiated in July to elevate the U.S. as a global leader in AI technology.

Meanwhile, Trump’s administration has also been focusing on establishing large data centers and securing contracts with high-tech firms to drive advancements in AI, underlining its importance in their strategy.

During a recent event, Musk and Trump had a brief conversation, hinting at a potential renewal of their relationship. The GSA confirmed that their agreement with Xai had been in development for several weeks.
