A single gunshot incident occurred Saturday night during a post-tailgate altercation near the South Bend campus of Notre Dame, injuring a woman and a police officer, according to reports from authorities.
The violence began around 7:30 p.m. ET, as crowds exited the university’s tailgating areas and made their way towards Eddy Street Commons. South Bend Police were informed by Notre Dame Police that a male suspect was observed brandishing a gun and aiming it at bystanders. However, when the police located a suspect who fit the description, they found him to be unarmed.
Approximately 20 South Bend Police Officers were present in Eddy Street Commons and responding to the initial call when a gunshot rang out near the intersection of Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard.
Following the shot, officers discovered a woman who had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg, alongside a South Bend Police officer who was injured, possibly from shrapnel or a ricochet.
Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover fully. Officials noted that the officer was “doing fine,” and the woman was reported to be “okay.”
Witnesses indicated that the suspected shooter fled the scene heading west, and reports described the suspect as a heavyset Black man with dreadlocks, donning blue shorts, a black shirt with a red and blue design on the front, and missing one shoe.
In quick response to the situation, police evacuated businesses and parking garages nearby. The South Bend Police Department secured the commercial district, advising the public to steer clear while the scene was under investigation.
Later that night, another shooting occurred about a mile away, resulting in at least two fatalities and one critical injury. However, police stated there was no evidence to suggest a connection between the two incidents.
