Five people, including three police officers, were shot and injured Sunday at a home in a New Orleans suburb, local police said. Said.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said police responded to a report of a shooting in Kenner, Louisiana around 9:45 a.m. and found two gunshot victims outside a home.
A standoff broke out between police and the gunman, 31-year-old Matthew Lazars. Lazars already had outstanding warrants for attempted murder and armed robbery. Police said the home belonged to one of Lazars’ family members.
Police obtained a search warrant and as the SWAT team approached the home, “shooting immediately began,” police said in a statement.
“At least one SWAT member returned fire. Three officers were shot, but it is unclear at this time whether Lazars was shot during initial contact.”
Police said a sheriff’s department sniper shot and killed Lazers after multiple attempts to negotiate his surrender.
Two of the officers who were shot have been released from the hospital, and the other three victims are said to be in stable condition.
