FBI Arrests Gymnastics Director on Child Pornography Charges
Recently, the FBI apprehended 38-year-old Shawn Gardner, a gymnastics director, over federal child pornography allegations. This arrest follows a period of more than three years since he was removed from his role at Butterfly’s gymnastics and dance lab in West Des Moines, Iowa, amid suspicions of sexual abuse.
Court documents indicated that Gardner was accused of sexually abusing at least three young gymnasts and secretly recording them undressing in a gym bathroom at a previous job in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute is notable for training prominent American gymnasts like Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas, who won gold medals at the Olympics.
Gardner expressed admiration for Chow’s culture in a 2019 interview, describing his role there as his dream job. He was later promoted to director of Butterfly Winter Classics, an event attracting over 1,000 gymnasts each year. While some of his students earned university scholarships, Gardner had broader aspirations for his influence in their lives.
In March 2022, reports emerged that Gardner employed “inappropriate spotting techniques,” which raised additional concerns.
A former Chow athlete came forward in April 2024 with accusations of abuse, recounting troubling interactions with Gardner during her time at the gym.
Currently held at the Polk County Jail, Gardner is set to be transported to Mississippi to face charges. Investigators seized items such as a cell phone and laptop, with reports mentioning the discovery of disturbing content, including images of minors in compromising situations seemingly recorded without consent.
The investigation also revealed other potential victims, amplifying concerns about Gardner’s past conduct. One video allegedly captured him turning off a camera after entering a bathroom, while testimonies indicated connections to a previous facility where similar images were reported.
As the case unfolds, Gardner faces significant legal repercussions, potentially leading to decades in prison. This situation highlights critical issues within the gymnastics community and the imperative for protective measures for young athletes.
