Haason Reddick’s costly Jets holdout has no end in sight

Haason Reddick's holdout reached a new level on Monday when the edge rusher missed the Jets' first game of the season.

The question remains as to how this will end.

Redick forfeited nearly $800,000 in appearance bonuses for missing games and lost nearly $6 million in fines and forfeitures due to his suspension.

There are no signs that the Jets and Redick are making progress in finding a way to add him to the team.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh reiterated Tuesday that Redick would be welcome to play if he were to play.

“Regardless of how I feel, the guys here are on our side,” Saleh said. “We're excited to work with the guys here, and I'll say it again: the minute he walks through the door we're going to give him a hug, give him the playbook and go from there.”

The Jets sacked 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy three times on Monday, including two times when he scrambled and failed to cross the line of scrimmage.

The only true sack came by Michael Clemons late in the game.

Some have speculated that the lack of a pass rush may have put Redick in a better position to seek a contract extension with the Jets.

Saleh said it was hard to pressure Purdy because of how fast he was pitching.

“I thought San Francisco executed their game plan really well in terms of chipping in the end and giving the ball away in a timely way,” Saleh said. “I think we weren't as effective because Brock didn't hold onto the ball long. We had some chances, but we just couldn't get him and beat him, but credit to them for that.”

“They did a great job of taking the ball out of his hands.”

The Jets moved Quinnen Williams to defensive end a few times in Monday's game, clearly in an attempt to get him out of the double-teams he faced all last year.

He was double-teamed 70 percent of his playing time last year.

“I thought it was a good matchup for Quinnen to go in there, guys can’t just slide in and hit him with four hands and I felt like he got the production. [Monday]” Saleh said.
