Haberman: Trump ‘made a pretty specific stare’ after report he dozed off during trial

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said she received “pretty unusual looks” in court Tuesday after she reported that former President Trump was briefly asleep on the first day of his criminal trial.

Haberman reported Monday that Trump “appeared to nod his head several times” during his appearance in court, with his “mouth slack and head hanging over his chest.”

“Mr. Trump appears to have been startled awake by the memo his lawyer handed him a few minutes ago,” Haberman said. Added in a few minutes.

President Trump’s hush money trial, the first criminal trial against a former and sitting president, began Monday in Manhattan with jury selection proceedings. After the break, Trump looked at Haberman, according to reports from the floor.

“After the remaining 30-odd jurors emerge from the chamber for a short afternoon recess, President Trump takes the stand,” Law360 reporter Frank Runyon wrote in a press pool report. “After the jurors left the courtroom, he looked at Prosecuting Attorney Alvin Bragg. Then Trump turned to reporters.”

“He glared at New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman for several seconds as he exited,” the pool notes said.

Haberman spoke about the “staring” in a CNN interview with Caitlan Collins on Monday night.

“He looked at me pretty pointedly and walked out of the room,” she said.

“Let me be clear: I have seen many people fall asleep in court,” Haberman continued. “We’ve seen jurors fall asleep. We’ve seen judges fall asleep. If a criminal defendant in a case falls asleep, we’re going to report it. ”

She added, “But he doesn’t like things like that being reported. I guess, I don’t know, but I think that’s what this was about. ” he added.
