Sen. Bill Hagerty Seeks Answers from Verizon Over FBI Data Transfer

Senator Bill Hagerty is pushing Verizon for explanations regarding the company’s delivery of personal cell phone data to the FBI without notifying him. This demand follows the alarming news that former special counsel Jack Smith allegedly monitored communications between Hagerty and various Republican lawmakers as part of the January 6, 2021 investigation.

Reports emerged that Smith’s investigative team, referred to as the “Arctic Frost,” was closely watching phone conversations involving several GOP senators, including Lindsey Graham, Cynthia Lummis, Marsha Blackburn, Ron Johnson, Josh Hawley, Dan Sullivan, Tommy Tuberville, and Pennsylvania Representative Mike Kelly.

Documents obtained by media outlets detail how the FBI monitored calls by tracing numbers and call origins. Hagerty expressed his outrage in a letter to Verizon, stating, “This week, I received shocking news: Without my consent and without my knowledge, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has obtained confidential information about my cell phone use.” He characterized this action as an unsettling breach of privacy and a serious violation of the separation of powers, adding that he has not received any updates from Verizon regarding the issue.

Hagerty is seeking information from Verizon about when it provided this personal data and the rationale behind the lack of notification. He also inquired whether Verizon has faced any requests or subpoenas from federal entities looking for detailed information related to his communications. Additionally, he is asking Verizon to clarify what measures, if any, it has taken to resist such demands.

He has requested a response from the company by Friday evening, demanding any documents or recordings connected to this situation. Verizon has yet to respond to inquiries for clarification.

The “Arctic Frost” initiative began on April 13, 2022, with Smith appointed as special prosecutor in November 2022. An FBI official acknowledged that the situation constitutes an inappropriate incident, which has triggered a broader review to ensure transparency within the agency.

In light of recent findings, the FBI has taken action, dismissing employees and disbanding its CR-15 unit following accusations of unwarranted surveillance of lawmakers. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that he is committed to reform, aiming to eliminate corruption and restore the bureau’s integrity.
