Avril Haines said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday that Iranian-backed militias have largely halted plans to attack U.S. forces. It’s unclear how long that will last.
Haines said the Middle East crisis is affecting both al-Qaeda and ISIS, directing their supporters to commit acts of violence against Israeli and U.S. interests.
The intelligence chief also spoke about cyberattacks in the United States.
“Last year we saw a significant increase in the number of ransomware attacks around the world, with the number increasing by 74%,” Haines said.
“The level of terrorist threat is of grave concern,” he continued.
Haynes noted that nearly every critical infrastructure in the United States that was attacked involved weak passwords, unpatched known vulnerabilities, and poorly secured networks.
