Haitian Gang Leader Sentenced to Life for 2021 Hostage Crisis
A man identified by federal prosecutors as a gang leader from Haiti has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in a 2021 hostage crisis that led to the abduction of 16 American citizens, including five children.
Jolie Jarmin, aged 34, from Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, was also fined $1,700 by the court.
The victims, part of the Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministry, were returning home from their work at an orphanage when they were kidnapped in October 2021. According to DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, “The missionary group included 12 adults and five infants, including one 6-year-old, one 3-year-old, and one 8-month-old. This judgment makes clear that Jarmin’s plan to use Christians as pawns to win his freedom backfired.”
While incarcerated, Jarmin reportedly led the 400 Mawozo gang, allegedly using unmonitored cellphones to coordinate the group’s activities—a claim he and his lawyer denied. It seems he maintained connections with around 400 other Mawozo leaders, most of whom were his relatives, hoping to negotiate his release in exchange for the hostages, who were held captive at gunpoint for 62 days before managing to escape.
The Haitian government transferred Jarmin to U.S. custody in May 2022 following an arrest warrant.
“This case demonstrates the Department of Justice’s relentless pursuit of those who kidnap American citizens overseas,” stated then-Attorney General Merrick Garland. “We will use the full power of our law enforcement agencies to hold accountable those responsible for compromising the safety of Americans anywhere in the world.”
Jarmin had previously received a 35-year sentence for a gun-trafficking conspiracy involving firearms smuggling to Haiti and laundering ransom payments collected by his gang.
During Jarmin’s sentencing, Ray Knocker, a victim who had been taken hostage along with his wife and five children, described the experience as “life-changing.” He expressed hope that he might find “God’s peace,” asserting, “True freedom is not found outside prison walls. True freedom is found within your own heart.”
