Hakeem Jeffries Avoids Answering Questions About Mamdani’s Socialism

Jeffries Questioned on Support for Socialist Candidate

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries faced repeated questions on Thursday regarding his stance on the socialist agenda of Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. During an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Jeffries expressed clear frustration as anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin pressed him about Mamdani’s candidacy and the broader leftist policies associated with it. Jeffries seemed hesitant to fully address Mamdani’s views or acknowledge the growing presence of socialist candidates within his party, which has become a notable topic recently.

“It’s puzzling why we keep discussing Democratic candidates who aren’t even in office yet,” Jeffries remarked after Sorkin posed multiple questions about his opinions on Mamdani and socialism.

Mamdani has emerged as a key figure for the left wing of the Democrats after his surprising victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the recent primary. Jeffries, whose district is entirely within Brooklyn, met with Mamdani and other democratic socialists in July but has since refrained from backing them publicly.

While he has highlighted the issue of affordability championed by socialist candidates, he hesitated to endorse their specific policy solutions during the interview. Sorkin asked about a range of proposals, such as freezing rents and offering free public transportation, to which Jeffries didn’t provide a direct answer. Instead, he suggested that it was Mamdani’s responsibility to convince New York City voters of the merit of his platform.

“Zohran needs to make his case to New Yorkers, including those I represent, that his solutions will truly address the affordability crisis in the city,” Jeffries stated. He acknowledged that living costs are a major concern both locally and nationally.

When pressed further on whether he agreed with Mamdani’s approach, Jeffries shifted to a broader view, mentioning the private sector’s role in tackling the rising housing costs. “My stance is clear, and I’ll continue to stress this: collaboration across all levels—city, state, and federal, along with the private sector—is crucial,” he said.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), representing House Republicans, has seized upon Jeffries’ reluctance to directly address Mamdani and socialism. NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella commented that Jeffries’ reaction indicates a greater issue: “He’s frustrated about being asked about socialism rather than the concept itself. The party is increasingly led by its most extreme members, and Jeffries appears hesitant.”

Additionally, the NRCC launched a new ad campaign linking Mamdani’s socialist views with those of other prominent Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This aims to underline the vulnerabilities of Democratic incumbents in the current political climate.

A Siena University poll released recently highlights Mamdani’s strength in the running, showing him gaining nearly 20% of the vote, while Cuomo stands at around 25%. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and current Mayor Eric Adams are trailing at 7% each.
