House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) believes that Republicans will ultimately yield to Democrats, citing “public sentiment” as a key reason for his view.
Interestingly, he didn’t mention that it was Democrats who initiated the government shutdown for political reasons.
A reporter pressed Jeffries, asking, “Given how the president tweets memes about you and your party, do you really think there will be a negotiation when he’s already dismantling healthcare?”
Jeffries responded, emphasizing that “public sentiment” plays a significant role. “People recognize that Donald Trump and the Republicans are responsible for the federal government shutdown, and they see the chaotic pattern this administration has followed since its inception, rife with cruelty and corruption,” he explained.
He reiterated, saying, “This is just the first week of their shutdown, but we’ve seen months of chaos inflicted upon the American public, caused by Trump and the Republicans.”
Continuing, Jeffries asserted:
Americans understand that House and Senate Democrats are working hard to safeguard healthcare. The crisis caused by Republican healthcare policies is affecting people across the country, hitting working-class families, rural communities, and urban centers hard. The impact is unprecedented in terms of the suffering experienced due to Republican policies.
He stated that House Democrats are advocating for the cancellation of cuts and the preservation of healthcare.

Recent voting trends indicate that many Americans hold Democrats accountable for the shutdown, as most prefer not to see the government closed.
According to a Siena poll, reported by a news outlet, a significant majority of respondents (65%) believe that Democrats should avoid shutting down the government, while only 27% support the idea.
Interestingly, Democrats themselves are split; fewer than half (47%) feel that shutting the government down is warranted, but 43% disagree.
Furthermore, a notable 59% of independents think Democrats should not pursue a government shutdown, aligning with many Republicans.
This week, Vice President JD Vance claimed it’s “clear” that the shutdown is a consequence of Democratic actions, despite claims from the left.
“Almost every House Republican voted to keep the government running. Similarly, nearly all Senate Republicans supported this last night, along with a few moderate Democrats,” he added.

“You can have disagreements, but there’s no arguing that Republicans voted to keep the government open,” he continued. “The president is ready to sign off on a deal to reopen the government. We just need a few more Democrats to come on board.”
