Hakeem Jeffries claims Trump is attempting to 'steal' the midterm elections.

Accusations of Gerrymandering Ahead of 2026

In a recent statement, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused former President Trump of attempting to “steal” and “rig” the political landscape for the 2026 elections through gerrymandering. However, he didn’t confirm whether he and fellow Democrats in New York were considering adjustments to the state’s congressional map.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Jeffries declared, “Democrats across the country will respond as they did in California to prevent Trump from manipulating the midterm elections.” Despite his assertive remarks, he sidestepped specific queries from host Dana Bash about possible strategies in his home state regarding Republican efforts to reshape district lines.

Instead of detailing plans for New York, Jeffries criticized Republican tactics in Texas while highlighting Democratic responses in California. When pressed again about New York, he stated, “As the situation evolves, appropriate plans will be developed in New York and beyond.”

Lawmakers from both sides are currently engaged in discussions about redrawing district maps ahead of the 2026 midterms, aiming to bolster their party’s position. Recently, Texas Republicans, influenced by Trump, approved a controversial new map aimed at flipping some competitive seats in the upcoming elections.

This new Texas map is seen as a significant win for the GOP. In contrast, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is trying to mitigate GOP advancements by introducing a new congressional map, which is set for a vote by voters in November. This proposal is expected to secure five additional seats for Democrats.

Other states are also exploring similar re-districting tactics, with Republicans in places like Indiana, Missouri, and Florida discussing potential gerrymandering, while some Democrats in New York, Illinois, and Maryland have pursued the same strategy.

Even with Jeffries’ reluctance to fully commit to a New York strategy, Governor Kathy Hochul has called for a vigorous response against gerrymandering efforts. She expressed her frustration about the ongoing political battles, suggesting a need for proactive measures. Hochul remarked, “I’m done fighting with my hands tied.”

Her stance indicates support for redrawing New York’s congressional map, which she previously criticized when discussing Republican efforts in other states. In July, New York Democrats proposed a constitutional amendment permitting lawmakers to revise state legislative maps before 2028. This amendment requires state legislature approval in 2026 but includes clauses that prevent the creation of overtly partisan maps.

Despite these challenges, Hochul’s comments reflect a push for more assertive actions among Democrats. “We cannot ignore the dramatic changes in the political landscape,” she emphasized. “Sticking to past norms is no longer acceptable. Those days are over.”
