Jeffries Accuses Vance of Misrepresentation in Oval Office Meeting
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) criticized Vice President J.D. Vance following an event with Breitbart News, claiming Vance misrepresented the interactions during their Oval Office meeting about avoiding a government shutdown.
During a discussion moderated by Breitbart’s Washington bureau chief Matthew Boyle, Vance recounted the meeting that included President Trump, Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and others. However, Jeffries contended that Vance was either lying or confused about the details of the meeting.
“J.D. Vance is lying. We’re unsure whether it’s deliberate or just confusion. The meeting took a serious turn. Schumer and I emphasized the urgent need to address the Republican health crisis, especially regarding the Affordable Care Act’s tax extension,” Jeffries remarked. He mentioned a sudden appearance of two individuals presenting “Trump 2028” hats.
In his response, Jeffries expressed concern about Vance, stating, “I think there’s something really off with him.” He relayed that he had questioned Vance about the hats, to which Vance replied with “no comment.” Jeffries claimed Trump intervened, implying Vance needed more preparation for such situations.
“It was J.D. Vance who seemed apprehensive during that meeting. Trump essentially indicated Vance isn’t ready for what’s coming in 2028, which I pointed out,” Jeffries added.
Jeffries also noted an unexpected photographer appeared at the meeting. “The photos could easily be used against me,” he remarked, clarifying that neither Schumer nor he showed any interest in the hats beyond pressing Vance about the implications of a potential Trump candidacy.
Vance presented a different narrative during his Breitbart appearance, arguing that the meeting occurred before the Democrats opted for a government shutdown, filled with various partisan demands, including healthcare for undocumented immigrants.
When asked about the MAGA hats, Vance confirmed the meeting took place just ahead of the shutdown, stating he met with Jeffries and Schumer in the Oval Office. He recalled a moment when Trump, whispering to a secretary, sent her to fetch two “Trump 2028” hats for Jeffries and Schumer, stating he felt – somewhat jokingly – that he was in a tricky situation as the photographer documented the encounter.
Vance described the entire incident as humorous, suggesting that neither Jeffries nor Schumer acknowledged the healthcare issues their parties had created. “They expressed a desire to tackle American healthcare issues. Trump agreed but pointed out that their party had made significant errors with the Affordable Care Act,” Vance recounted. He mentioned that the Democrats were caught off guard and insisted that their requirements to fix the problems should come before any government reopening, which Trump, according to Vance, deemed unreasonable. Vance concluded by summarizing Trump’s suggestion: “Why not reopen the government first and then collaborate on improvements?” This proposal, however, was rejected, leading to the government shutdown.
