Democratic Leader Explains Absence from Vigil
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, representing New York, provided a brief explanation for his absence from Charlie Kirk’s Congressional vigil on Tuesday. When questioned about it during a press conference, he simply stated, “I had a meeting.”
Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had announced that Congress would hold an overnight event to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was tragically killed last week during a speaking engagement at a Utah university.
The atmosphere at the Capitol was mixed, with only a few House Democrats in attendance alongside a larger number of Republicans. When asked about the lack of Democratic presence, Jeffries remarked, “I don’t know.” He emphasized the need to discuss with individual Democrats to understand their reasons for not being there.
Democrats present at the event included a few key figures, like Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.). Notably, none of the top four Democratic leaders, including Jeffries, attended the vigil.
Johnson downplayed the absence of Democrats, stating he didn’t focus on the group’s composition. He expressed satisfaction that the event was bipartisan and mentioned his desire to be more involved, though, he remained unsure about why more Democrats hadn’t participated.
