Users expressed outrage on social media over a long-time illegal immigrant who has resided in the U.S. for 37 years, after she called for amnesty during a speech, accompanied by Democratic leaders.
“I urge all of you to advocate for immigration reform,” Margarita Cielo Balbuena shared through an interpreter, standing next to House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Rob Menendez this past week.
“Those of us who have lived in this country for at least seven years deserve a path to citizenship,” she added. “We need to put an end to these raids which immigrants are facing in Dover.”
A clip of her speech gained traction online soon after. Cielo Balbuena pointed out, “Individuals like me, who’ve been here since 1989, paying taxes, owning homes, operating businesses, and raising children and grandchildren born here, face severe mental and physical distress, as well as violent arrests and detentions.”
Reports indicate that she spent two months in an ICE detention center, alleging inhumane treatment during her time there.
However, those opposed to illegal immigration were quick to criticize her statements. For example, former U.S. Customs and Border Protection commander Gregory Bovino remarked, “You’ve been in the U.S. since 1989, but you still rely on an interpreter.” He highlighted her demand for citizenship for individuals who have only been here for a much shorter period and cautioned against a sense of entitlement.
Bovino further commented on the perceived consequences of Democrats’ immigration policies, suggesting that such openness has fostered an environment where assimilation is not necessary anymore. The John Birch Society also issued a stern statement saying that no illegal immigrants should benefit from amnesty.
Online, critics echoed similar sentiments. One notable voice in social media, Brigitte Gabriel, stated bluntly, “I don’t have English or citizenship.” Another user pointed out that anyone truly wishing to become a citizen should prioritize learning the language irrespective of the country.
Actor Matthew Marsden demanded “immediate deportation,” asserting that a nation valuing its integrity must protect itself, including the removal of individuals in situations like Cielo Balbuena’s.
Rep. Jeffries, while participating in the same event advocating for immigration reform, called for the closure of another detention center, claiming it has been a site of significant protest and unrest.
In response to the controversy, the White House released a statement suggesting that rhetoric from sanctuary politicians has led to a sharp increase in assaults and death threats against ICE officers. It defended the agency, labeling its agents as heroes dedicated to capturing serious criminals in U.S. society and urged Democrats to cease their negative portrayal of these enforcement officials.
