Hakeem Jeffries supports Zohran Mamdani for mayor of NYC following a 3-month delay

Support for New York City’s Democratic Mayoral Candidate

After a long wait of four months, a significant Democrat in New York has backed a candidate for the city’s mayor. On Friday, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the Minority Leader in the U.S. House and a prominent figure in New York politics, expressed his support for Zoran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist and state representative hailing from Queens.

As election day draws nearer, Jeffries, who represents a district that includes parts of Brooklyn, stated that Mamdani has shown a commitment to serve all New Yorkers, even those who may not support him. He emphasized the candidate’s focus on tackling affordability issues, adding his endorsement to the Democratic ticket for the citywide elections.

This endorsement marks Jeffries as the second high-profile Democrat in New York to support Mamdani, following Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement in late September.

Mamdani Secures Key Endorsements

With early voting starting the next day, the support from both Jeffries and Hochul is expected to increase pressure on Sen. Chuck Schumer, who may need to express backing for Mamdani ahead of the upcoming election, which is mere days away.

Mamdani made headlines in June by winning the Democratic primary against several notable candidates, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo. If he secures victory in the general election, Mamdani would make history as the first Muslim and millennial mayor of the United States’ most populous city. Polls indicate he is leading strongly among Democratic voters.

The latest polling shows Mamdani with a significant double-digit advantage over Cuomo.

Republican Opponent and Political Dynamics

Curtis Sliwa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels, is the Republican candidate contending against Mamdani and finds himself trailing significantly in the polls. The current mayor, Eric Adams, had previously sought independence in his campaign but announced he would step down due to lackluster polling. Recently, he endorsed Cuomo, despite their earlier conflicts during the campaign.

Mamdani’s successful campaign revolved around affordable living in New York City, appealing to grassroots supporters and backing from well-known progressives like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. His use of social media, particularly TikTok, has helped him reach a younger audience.

On his agenda are policies such as eliminating fares for the bus system, making City University of New York tuition-free, freezing public housing rents, providing free childcare, and establishing government-operated grocery stores.

However, his platform hasn’t been without criticism, particularly concerning his views on Israel, comments about the New York Police Department, and proposals to redirect some police responsibilities toward social services.

Former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist,” coining a new nickname that he shared during an interview, referring to him as “my little communist mayor.”

Potential Political Ramifications

In light of the upcoming midterm elections, Republicans have ramped up efforts to bolster their mayoral candidates among vulnerable Democratic congressional members. A spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee framed Jeffries’s endorsement as yielding to the left-wing faction of his party, indicating a potential path toward electoral challenges.

Jeffries met with Mamdani a couple of times prior to the endorsement, noting the young candidate’s emphasis on affordability. While many House Democrats haven’t criticized Jeffries for his late support, some, including Ocasio-Cortez, have expressed opinions about primaries and party unity.

Despite the endorsements from Jeffries and Hochul, the New York Democratic Party chair has hesitated, and Rep. Tom Suozzi has openly stated he wouldn’t support Mamdani. The mounting criticism from Republicans suggests that Jeffries may have been swayed by pressure concerning Mamdani’s policies.
