Apollo Global Management Acquires Stake in Yankees
Apollo Global Management has acquired a 16 percent stake in the New York Yankees.
However, this development doesn’t indicate any change in the management of the prestigious Bronx team.
During a press conference on Wednesday addressing the 2026 season, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner clarified that the $2.6 billion financing deal does not signal a full sale of the franchise.
Steinbrenner mentioned that the funds will provide the Yankees with “more financial stability” for the future.
“No, it is not a precursor to fully selling the team,” Steinbrenner stated. “The whole goal of the Apollo deal was to infuse capital into the company that would offer us more financial stability for years to come, even in the time when I’m no longer here and the third generation takes the reins. They came in understanding this clearly. They are limited partners with rights similar to other limited partners, which is somewhat unusual for a private equity firm.”
“They were very enthusiastic about being part of the organization. So, no, it does not lead to a sale; it’s about ensuring financial stability for my sisters and for future generations.”
As reported in August by Charles Gasparino, Apollo secured an 8 percent stake in the team immediately and was granted preferred stock for the additional 8 percent, which can convert into full equity in four years.
While Apollo Sports Capital CEO Al Tylis will join the Yankee Global Enterprises board, Steinbrenner underscored that this does not imply that the private equity firm will have any say in day-to-day operations.
“Zero. They have rights like any of our other limited partners. Al, who leads this particular fund, is now on the Yankee Global board and is quite an intelligent individual,” Steinbrenner noted. “I anticipate productive conversations with him, similar to my dialogue with other partners.”
“But they have zero rights and zero control over day-to-day operations—absolutely nothing.”
Recent reports indicate that MLB owners voted this summer to increase the ownership limit for private equity groups from 15 percent to 20 percent, but they cannot exceed the controlling owner’s stake in a team.
Hal Steinbrenner took over daily management of the Yankees in late 2008, following the purchase of the team by his father, George, and a group of investors in 1973.
