Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley fought back tears on Tuesday during a campaign speech as she talked about her husband’s military deployment overseas and vowed to continue fighting former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination.
Speaking to a crowd ahead of Saturday’s primary in South Carolina, Haley offered a vision for the country: “A country where we can still come together and move forward together, not with anger and fear, but with faith and hope.” I called on you to share. We’ve done it before. ”
She said this same vision motivated both her and her husband, Michael, to serve their country, and she became emotional when discussing her husband’s military deployment. The topic has been a focus of the campaign since President Trump targeted her husband’s absence from the campaign trail.
“This vision has guided every generation. I have been called to serve as the governor of this great state and as an ambassador for the greatest country in the world. And that same vision has inspired my husband to lead the United States. “I called him to serve in uniform. He is a major in the South Carolina Army National Guard,” Haley said.
“Michael is on my mind as I prepare for what’s to come,” she continued, before pausing for a few seconds, apparently trying to compose herself. The crowd applauded as Haley smiled and took a sip from her glass of water.
“I wish Michael was here today. And I wish the kids and I could have seen him tonight, but we can’t,” Haley continued, her voice shaking.
“He serves on the other side of the world, where conflict is commonplace, where terrorists are hiding among innocent people, and where Iranian terrorist proxies are currently attacking American troops. This is Michael’s second deployment. It was hard for us to say goodbye to him the first time when he was deployed to Afghanistan. It was even harder when he was deployed to Africa last summer. was.”
In recent weeks, President Trump has mocked the couple’s relationship and publicly questioned why Michael didn’t travel with him, even though Trump’s own wife, Melania Trump, has barely participated in the campaign. I was asking questions.
President Trump mocked the size of Haley’s rally last week, saying it was an embarrassment for her husband and that she should “go home to save her dying campaign.”
Haley has fought back against these attacks and continued to do so in her remarks Tuesday.
“As every military family knows, when a loved one deploys, we begin a year of prayer. It’s first and foremost a prayer for their safety. But it’s also a prayer of gratitude.” she said.
“My children and I both know why Michael left. He stood up to keep us safe. We’re not alone. He stood up to protect our country’s freedoms. And the way we live. Michael is fighting for the country he loves. All of his brothers and sisters, wherever they are stationed in this dangerous world, will take up arms. They took a stand. , because America is worth fighting for, even dying for.”
“I will continue to stand up for myself because America is worth living for,” she said.
