Haley jabs Stephanopoulos over exchange on Biden not finishing term

Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday slammed ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos for denying comments she made last year that President Biden would not last a full term in the White House.

Haley, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination earlier this year, Reposted the video on social platform X She appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” (GMA) in August and argued that a vote for Biden is a vote for Vice President Harris.

Haley reposted the video on Tuesday, captioning it, “George, can you trust me?”

“There’s no way Joe Biden will complete his term. I believe Kamala Harris will be the next president. This should send chills down the spine of every American,” the former Republican presidential candidate said in an exchange with Stephanopoulos last summer.

“With all due respect, just think about this for a moment: How do you know Joe Biden is not going to complete his term? On what basis?” Stephanopoulos interjected at the time.

“Just ask the American people,” Haley responded at the time. “You’ve seen how he’s deteriorated over the last few years. Tell the American people, George, there’s no way Joe Biden will serve another term. There’s no way an 81-year-old president can be president.”

Haley criticised Stephanopoulos as Biden faces growing calls from within his own party to drop out of the 2024 race after his disastrous debate performance with former President Trump last week.

Biden appeared to stumble and lose his train of thought throughout the forum, raising concerns about his mental health and ability to serve a second term in office.

The president has already secured the Democratic nomination with a majority of delegates and has insisted he has no plans to withdraw from the 2024 election.

Harris’ name has been repeatedly floated as a possible replacement for Biden if he were to drop out of the race. She has stepped up her support for the president, saying on Tuesday she was “proud” to be Biden’s running mate.

A CNN poll released Tuesday found her approval rating is closer to Trump’s than Biden’s.

Stephanopoulos, who anchors ABC’s “This Week” and “GMA,” will be Biden’s first television interview since last week’s debate. The interview will air on ABC, with portions of the conversation airing for the first time on Friday.

The full interview will air on both shows on Sunday.

Stephanopoulos has hosted “This Week” for more than 20 years and previously served as Democratic adviser and communications director for former President Clinton.

ABC will host the second presidential debate between Biden and former President Trump, scheduled for September 10.
