Nearly half of Americans believe former President Trump should stop campaigning and say a conviction would be “right,” according to a new poll. ABC News/Ipsos Poll It was released on Sunday.
Trump was convicted on Thursday of 34 felony counts of forgery of business documents, the first time a former president has been convicted of a crime. Trump is appealing the sentence.
Just 50 percent of those surveyed said convicting Trump was the right decision by the New York jury, while 49 percent said Trump should immediately drop out of the presidential race.
Despite this, Trump’s favorability ratings have not declined since the last survey: About 31% of Americans have a favorable view of the former president, both before and after his conviction.
The charges related to hush money paid just weeks before the 2016 election to cover up an alleged past affair between Trump and an adult film star.
The trial has been met with mixed reviews, with just under half of respondents (47%) agreeing that the charges against Trump are politically motivated, according to the poll.
A majority, 51 percent, believe Trump intentionally cheated in the case, while 12 percent said he cheated unintentionally.
The poll found that only 18% of Republicans favored conviction, while 83% of Democrats did, and 52% of independents, a key voting bloc, favored conviction.
Polls also show that President Biden remains unpopular: His approval rating is at 32%, down one point from a month ago and roughly the same as President Trump’s.
The Hill/Decision Desk polling average has Trump leading Biden by about 1 percentage point, but Biden has been catching up with Trump since the conviction and has led Trump in most polls since Thursday.
