Ryne Sandberg’s Health Update Amid Cancer Battle
Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg provided an update on his ongoing struggle with prostate cancer on Wednesday.
Sandberg, now 65, was first diagnosed in January 2024. He had shared in August that he was cancer-free. Unfortunately, in December, he revealed that the cancer had returned and spread to other organs.
“I wanted to share updates about my health. I have been treated regularly, so it has been a challenge these past few months,” Sandberg expressed in his latest message. “I look forward to making the most of my daily life with my beloved family and friends while I continue to fight.”
After his diagnosis in December, he noted he was “returning to more intensive care.”
Sandberg had initially tossed the ceremonial first pitch during the Cubs’ home opener in April. He expressed enthusiasm for the season ahead, saying he felt excited about the games even if he hadn’t attended as many as he would have liked. “I was watching all the games and was thrilled about the second half. It was like Wrigley Field was alive again, like in 1984!” he reflected.
Currently, the Cubs hold a 57-39 record, boasting a 1.0-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers, providing more reasons for fans to celebrate. Sandberg dedicated most of his 16-year career to the Cubs, playing in all but 13 games. He earned a spot in the All-Star Games for ten consecutive years and is a proud nine-time Gold Glove winner and seven-time Silver Slugger.
