Hall of Famer Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael undergoes blood transfusion after developing infections

Steve “Mongo” McMichael received a blood transfusion this week after developing MRSA and a urinary tract infection.

One of the newest members of the Football Hall of Fame was admitted to intensive care Thursday with a urinary tract infection, which his family initially thought was pneumonia.

His family announced his blood transfusion on Saturday.

“We ask for everyone’s prayers to help Steve through this difficult time,” the family said in a statement. “Steve, his family, and his closest friends believe in the power of prayer. We thank you for your love and continued support of Mongo.”

His family said Friday that he was responding to antibiotics, had fluid removed from his lungs, and was expected to be released in the coming days.

McMichael, 66, has been battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) since 2021.

The Chicago Bears legend was selected for the 2024 Hall of Fame class along with Dwight Freeney, Devin Hester, Julius Peppers, Andre Johnson, Patrick Willis and Randy Gradishar. He is scheduled to take office in Canton on August 3.

McMichael’s wife, Misty, said the former defensive tackle received word in August that he would be selected as a finalist. A family spokesperson said a petition and letter-writing campaign in support of Mr McMichael was launched in 2022.

He was also hospitalized in August 2023, admitted to the ICU with sepsis and given two types of intravenous antibiotics, the spokesperson said. He was unconscious at the time of admission. He was then diagnosed with pneumonia.
