Hamas Leader Commends 'Brave' Australian Prime Minister for Supporting Palestinian Statehood

Australia’s Recognition of Palestinian State Draws Mixed Reactions

This week, Hamas leaders voiced their approval of Australia’s decision to acknowledge the Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly, describing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s move as “courageous.”

Sheikh Hassan Youssef, a co-founder of Hamas, expressed his thoughts through a statement reported in local Australian media, saying, “This position reflects political courage and a commitment to justice and the right to self-determination.” He urged other countries, especially those valuing freedom and human dignity, to follow Australia’s example and take practical steps to alleviate Palestinian suffering under occupation.

The announcement was made by Albanese on Monday, following similar declarations from left-leaning leaders in countries like France and Canada, according to reports.

In a later statement, another Hamas official acknowledged that while the recognition was somewhat overdue, it was still welcome, remarking, “It’s better late than never.” Ismail al-Tawabuta, the media director for Hamas, noted that there is a growing global awareness regarding the injustices faced by Palestinians for decades. He urged the Australian government to turn this recognition into actionable steps, applying pressure to end the Israeli occupation.

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar ridiculed Albanese’s decision on social media, emphasizing the warm reception it received from Hamas. He shared screenshots that highlighted the group’s approval.

Others in Israel also chimed in, reflecting widespread discontent. Israeli Vice Minister Sharen Haskell accused Albanese of being “separated from reality,” highlighting a sharp contrast in perspectives on the matter.
