Hamas Faces Challenges Amid Israeli Actions
Hamas appears to be in a precarious position as Israel continues to weaken its influence and that of Iranian-backed factions in the Gaza Strip, which poses serious challenges to the group’s operations, as reported by Reuters.
The organization has suffered significant losses in leadership, contending with a compromised tunnel system, and risks losing support from its powerful allies in Tehran following recent strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian targets. Following a ceasefire brokered by former President Trump on June 23, Israel has shifted its focus to dismantling Hamas.
Some construction workers in Gaza noted that while Hamas operations have changed—now involving queues at bakeries and aid truck supervision—the group still maintains a presence, even if it looks and acts differently than before the conflict.
Recent reports indicate Hamas is struggling financially, which complicates its ability to pay fighters while Israel aims to consolidate control over Gaza, effectively preventing Hamas from re-establishing its hold.
In response to its losses, Hamas seems to be bolstering its ranks with additional fighters, potentially offsetting earlier diminutions since the war began. Israeli forces have been actively targeting Hamas leaders, including the assassination of Mohamed Singhwar in May.
In a strategic move, Israel has chosen to support rival factions within Gaza as a means of indirectly combating Hamas.
The ongoing conflict, which erupted following an attack by extremist groups on October 7, has resulted in notable casualties and the take of around 240 hostages, many of whom have since been released or died during a brief ceasefire.
Military action in Gaza resumed on March 18 after Hamas allegedly rejected two US proposals regarding hostage releases. Despite facing international pressure to de-escalate, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has persisted with military operations.
Further complicating the situation, Israel conducted significant strikes in Iran, targeting leading military and logistical centers associated with its nuclear ambitions. Following an attack on June 12, President Trump authorized further strikes on June 21, asserting these actions were intended to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
As of now, there has been no response from Israel’s Foreign Ministry regarding these developments.
