Hannah Green goes bonkers at Ford Championship with epic 61 for lead

Hannah Green had a perfect performance in the second round of the inaugural Ford Championship on Friday at Seville Golf and Country Club in Gilbert, Arizona.

Entering the second round of the Ford Championship, Green moved up to three under par after shooting a 69 on the first day. He was six strokes behind the leader, but he made a complete comeback.

She shot an 11-under 61 with no bogeys, a career low. Green moved up 52 spots on the leaderboard and held a one-stroke lead at 14 under. The 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship winner finished the round with six straight birdies.

But Green wasn’t expecting much from himself Friday.

“I didn’t feel that great overnight,” Green said. “I had a runny nose and a sore throat, so I wasn’t expecting much so maybe it was a good thing…”

“Given the conditions on the golf course this week, it’s definitely up for grabs. It’s nice to see the ball go in and my reading was correct. I didn’t actually feel like my game changed that much yesterday. There wasn’t. I was able to read the green a little better and hit the putt that went in.”

Green made 11 birdies on the day, but could have dropped further.

“The last putt hit me on the lip, so it might have been a 60,” she said.

There’s still a lot of golf left. As of this writing, 14 women are within four strokes of Greene, so now is not the time to lose focus.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself,” Green said. “The conditions over the weekend will be different than the last two days, so we need to be careful not to get too high, calm down and prepare for the next two days.”

The Australian has already won once this season at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. She aims to join Nelly Korda as back-to-back winners in 2024. Korda is one of 14 women within four strokes of the lead, so she could be an interesting weekend for the women.
