‘Hard-working and motivated’ NYPD veteran cop dies after medical episode, hitting head on icy ground: sources

A “hard-working and motivated” retired NYPD officer tragically died Tuesday morning after suffering an apparent medical condition and hitting his head on icy pavement, according to law enforcement officials and the police union. did.

Officer Hector Dillon was off-duty when he suffered an apparent medical emergency on West 120th Street near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. According to police and officials, he fell and hit his head in Harlem around 11 a.m.

The man was found lying on the ground unconscious and unresponsive and was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he died from his injuries, police said.

Dillon joined the NYPD in July 2011 and was most recently assigned to the 75th Precinct, which covers New York City east of Brooklyn, according to the Police Benevolent Association.

He leaves behind a wife and four children, ranging in age from 9 to 24, and was attending nursing school, the union said.

“Officer Hector Dillon was a hardworking and motivated police officer who dedicated his life to helping others,” PBA President Patrick Hendry said in a statement.

“Not only did he put on the uniform and serve this city, he spent his time studying to advance his career and help more people. We think of the family and friends he leaves behind. It's heartbreaking, but we will support him in any way we can.”

The city medical examiner's office will determine the official cause of Dillon's death.
