House Minority Leader Jeffries’ Livestream Low Views Amid Government Shutdown
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a live stream on YouTube addressing the government shutdown, which has garnered fewer than 100 views after several hours. As of 9:10 am Eastern time, the stream titled “Stop Republican Shutdowns” had attracted just 69 viewers. The government officially closed at 12:01 am Wednesday after Congress could not pass a Republican-led funding suspension bill.
In a notable vote, three Senate Democrats—John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, and Angus King of Maine—joined Republicans to keep the government operating. On the flip side, Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky voted with Democrats against the measure, citing a lack of spending cuts.
Democrats have also called for an extension of tax credits enhanced by the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire at the end of 2025.
Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement blaming Republicans and former President Donald Trump for the shutdown. They expressed frustration, stating, “After months of making life more difficult and expensive, Donald Trump and the Republicans shut down the federal government because they didn’t want to protect American healthcare. Over the past few days, President Trump’s actions have become more volatile and unlimited.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson mentioned in an interview with CNBC that Democrats need to “come to their senses” and collaborate with Republicans on the funding bill.
A recent poll by The New York Times and Siena University found that 65% of Americans are against Democrats shutting down the government.
