Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak in Harlem

HARLEM, Manhattan — Health officials report that two individuals have perished among nearly 60 diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease in Harlem since last month.

The New York City Health Department provided an update on their investigation into a local cluster of Legionnaires’ cases in Central Harlem, associated with ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039, along with surrounding areas.

As of now, 58 people have been identified with the illness since July 25, resulting in two fatalities.

Officials indicated that remediation measures for the 11 cooling towers, which initially tested positive for the presence of Legionella pneumophila, have been completed. This bacterium is responsible for causing Legionnaires’ disease.

Residents and workers in the affected area experiencing flu-like symptoms—such as a cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, or trouble breathing—are strongly urged to seek medical care immediately.

Particularly vulnerable populations, including those aged 50 and older, cigarette smokers, and people with chronic lung conditions or weakened immune systems, should seek timely care if symptoms arise.

Understanding Legionnaires’ Disease

Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which thrives in warm water.

Individuals can contract it by inhaling water vapor that carries the bacteria.

This disease isn’t spread from person to person and is typically treatable with antibiotics. Early treatment is key to minimizing potential complications.

Legionnaires’ disease can originate from various plumbing systems where conditions favor Legionella growth, including cooling towers, whirlpool spas, hot tubs, humidifiers, hot water tanks, and large air-conditioning systems’ evaporative condensers.
