Harris' 2019 tweet reappears after she criticizes Trump administration for Kimmel's suspension

Controversy Erupts Over Jimmy Kimmel Suspension

Elon Musk has taken a stance, suggesting that his defense is centered around “free speech,” particularly in relation to Jimmy Kimmel’s situation. Musk has even called for a ban on former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris from social media platforms.

Harris expressed her disapproval regarding Disney’s decision to suspend “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” which she described as “indefinitely.” She defended Kimmel, criticizing the actions as a “complete abuse of power” by the Trump administration.

“What we are witnessing is the complete abuse of power,” Harris pointed out, accusing the administration of weaponizing influence to silence criticism. She emphasized the importance of not accepting such direct attacks on free speech.

Many users on X, including Musk himself, have noted past statements made by Harris, hinting that there seems to be a level of hypocrisy concerning her views on censorship.

Musk drew attention to a tweet Harris made back in 2019, asserting that Trump’s presence on the platform warranted his suspension. At that time, she was a U.S. Senator representing California while campaigning for vice president.

Meanwhile, Musk added his voice to the conversation on Friday, sharing his thoughts with a few emojis attached.

Kimmel’s show faced suspension after accusations arose that the conservatives were engaging in what they called “new lows” by linking a leftist ideology to Tyler Robinson, who has been implicated in the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Kimmel expressed his frustration, stating that the actions taken by some were an attempt to mischaracterize and gain political leverage.

The suspension has raised questions about the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and its role in the matter, with differing opinions emerging across the political spectrum. For instance, Senator Ted Cruz from Texas warned that conservatives risked regret over the precedent being set.

Cruz remarked that Kimmel was lying in his representations, fueling his argument by claiming that there were threats regarding ABC News’ broadcasting license.

In an appearance with Sean Hannity, FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr indicated the unique responsibilities broadcasters have, defending the actions of local affiliates like Nexstar and Sinclair for ceasing to carry “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Kerr remarked about the need for accountability, noting that the FCC had not enforced its public interest obligations effectively for many years.

The White House responded to the controversy, clarifying that the decision to suspend Kimmel’s show was strictly an ABC executive decision, denying any influence from the Biden administration.

This incident fits within a broader narrative of censorship tied to the Biden-Harris administration, particularly notable during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Jen Psaki addressed the media, acknowledging the administration’s approach to “flagging problematic Facebook posts.” More recently, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed, under oath, that the Biden administration had pushed for content moderation on his platform, revealing an evolving conversation about censorship in contemporary politics.
