Harris asserts that the Virginia redistricting decision aids Trump in manipulating the 2026 elections.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has criticized President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, accusing them of attempting to “rig the 2026 election” following a recent ruling by the Virginia Supreme Court that annulled a voter-approved redistricting initiative. In her remarks, Harris argued that the court’s decision undermined the democratic process, asserting that it would aid Trump’s goals of manipulating the upcoming election.

She expressed her frustration on social media, stating, “Today, the Virginia Supreme Court ignored the will of the people and overturned a democratically elected map.” Harris added that this ruling would bolster Republican efforts to erode voting rights. This decision represents a crucial win for Republicans as they gear up for the midterms in 2026, amidst an already heated national debate over redistricting and congressional power.

The Virginia Supreme Court determined that the legislative process used to advance the proposal contravened the state’s constitution, rendering the referendum legally ineffective. Notably, the bill had narrowly passed with a 51% to 49% vote, which would have shifted redistricting authority from a bipartisan commission to the Democratic-controlled Legislature until 2030, essentially granting Democrats a significant advantage.

In a show of support for the ruling, Trump labeled it a major win for the Republican Party, expressing his pleasure on social media.

The Democratic response was less celebratory, with DNC Chairman Ken Martin decrying the decision as a partisan maneuver by “unelected justices” that disregarded the people’s will. Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones condemned the ruling as disenfranchising voters and indicated he was exploring legal options to counteract the decision.

Harris reinforced this sentiment in her social media posts, pledging not to relent in the struggle to reclaim the power of the electorate. She recently emphasized the need for a vigorous battle against disenfranchisement, highlighting deep-seated disillusionment with the American Dream during an event in Las Vegas.

Despite these challenges, Harris faces questions regarding her own political ambitions. Democratic leaders appear divided on whether she should be the party’s choice for 2028, with some expressing uncertainty about future candidates. The Virginia ruling adds further complexity to the ongoing debate over redistricting as both Democrats and Republicans strategize for the upcoming elections.

Harris reaffirmed her commitment to engaging with voters and rallying for their causes, saying, “I am a very, very strong believer that when you feel powerless, you are powerless. And when you feel powerful, you are powerful.” She urged her supporters to demonstrate their strength not only in the midterms but daily.
