Harris calls for eliminating filibuster to pass ‘Roe’ abortion bill into federal law

Vice President Kamala Harris said in the Wisconsin legislature that she supports reinstating Roe v. Wade and eliminating the 60-vote filibuster requirement to federalize abortion access nationwide. Tuesday in an interview with WPR.

Eliminating the filibuster, a Senate rule that allows the minority to block legislation while awaiting a supermajority vote, would make it easier to pass abortion rights legislation.

“I think we should get rid of the Roe filibuster,” Harris told the “Wisconsin Today” show, “and get to the point where we need 51 votes to actually enshrine in law reproductive freedom and the right of every person, every woman, to make decisions about her own body without the government telling her what to do with it.”

The vice president's comments came during his fourth campaign visit to the battleground state.

Harris also told WPR in an interview that Democrats will maintain their majority in the Senate and that “it's entirely possible we could take back the House.”

“The presidential election is incredibly important and will set the tone for the future, but I also want to highlight what we need to do to keep the Senate and win seats in the House of Representatives,” Harris said.

Harris has since made abortion a central issue in the Democratic presidential race this election cycle after initially saying she would support abolishing the filibuster to restore Roe v. Wade-era abortion protections in 2022. She also supported abolishing the filibuster to pass the progressive Green New Deal climate bill in 2019.

“With just two more seats in the Senate, we can codify Roe v. Wade and enshrine the protections of Roe into law,” Harris said in September 2022. “With just two more seats in the United States Senate, we can pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. We're two seats away.”

“As you know, President Joe Biden is tired of the outdated Senate rules that stand in the way of these two issues,” Harris said of the Senate filibuster. “He's made that clear and said he will not allow them to block these two issues. And as you know, I'm both the vice president and the president of the Senate. I can't wait to cast the deciding vote to stop the filibuster on voting rights and reproductive rights. I can't wait! 59 days.”
