Vice President Harris' campaign on Monday called former President Trump's social media posts about Florida's marijuana legalization vote “blatant pandering.”
In a post on Truth Social late Sunday night, President Trump said he would vote in favor of Amendment 3, which would legalize marijuana in Florida.
“As I have said before, I believe it is time to end the needless arrest and incarceration of adults for possessing small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” the former president wrote. “We need to implement sensible regulations while ensuring adults have access to safe, tested products.”
Harris campaign spokesman Joseph Costello said in a statement Monday that Trump's position on the measure is inconsistent with his record of success.
“Despite his blatant pandering, Donald Trump cannot disguise his long record of rolling back marijuana reform,” Costello said.
“As President, President Trump cracked down on non-violent marijuana crimes, weakened state legalization laws, opposed the Safe Banking Act, and even tried to eliminate medical marijuana protections,” he added.
“Donald Trump doesn't actually believe in marijuana reform, but the American people are smart enough to see through his campaign lies.”
In a post on Sunday, Trump said he would continue to work on marijuana reform if he returns to the White House.
“As president, we will continue to focus on research to make marijuana a Schedule 3 drug for medical use, work with Congress to pass commonsense legislation including safe banking for state-chartered businesses, and support states' rights to pass marijuana laws that work so well for their residents, like Florida,” he wrote.
Earlier this year, the Biden Administration announced it had begun a formal rulemaking process to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I designation to a Schedule III designation.
“This is a landmark moment. Today, my Administration took a major step by reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule 1 drug to a Schedule 3 drug, a critical move to reverse years of inequity,” President Biden said. It said in a statement On what was then social platform X.
However, Biden failed to deliver on his 2020 campaign promise to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.
President Trump has previously indicated he might support legislation to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
“In the state of Florida, along with many other states that have already done so, the Third Amendment will legalize marijuana for personal use by adults,” Trump said. stated in the post “Whether people like it or not, this is being done with voter approval, so it has to be done right,” he said on Truth Social late last month.
